Whilst mindfulness has been around for centuries, it has only recently become popular in the western world; its roots go back to ancient Buddhism.
Most people think of mindfulness as a form of meditation. While mindfulness meditation is certainly one way to practice, it is not the only way. In fact, mindfulness can be practiced in any moment of your day, no matter what you are doing. Mindfulness is all about being present and aware in the moment. When you are mindful, you focus on what you are currently experiencing without attaching any judgment or opinion to it. This can be difficult at first, but with practice, it becomes easier and more natural. There are many benefits to practicing mindfulness, including improved mental health, stress relief, and greater clarity and focus.
We are all constantly inundated with stimuli from the time we wake up until the time we go to bed. From the noise of the TV or radio to the many emails and notifications that bombard our phones, it can be difficult to stay focused and present in the moment. According to a study published in the journal "Psychology and Aging," regular meditation can improve both memory and creativity. The study involved taking two groups of people, one group meditated daily for eight weeks, and the other group did not. At the end of the eight weeks, both groups were tested on their memory recall and creative thinking abilities. The group that had been meditating scored significantly higher on both tests than the group that had not been meditating. This could be your chance for some quiet meditation time combined with daily affirmations and some daily journaling time. Mornings are the best time to bring focus and calm to your being.
If this is new to you, maybe go to bed a bit earlier and set the alarm 30 minutes before you typically start your day. Remembering this is time for YOU. Go easy on yourself, it can take a while to create new habits.
If your location allows try facing the sun as it rises above the ocean, imagine you are joining with the universe, feeling the energy as you tap into the early morning light. Or you could light a candle adding a peaceful aura to your chosen meditation space at home. Pause, take some deep slow breaths as you center yourself before beginning your chosen yoga sequence.
At this time of the day it’s most beneficial to work on the spine, stretching it out after a night in bed is a great way to get moving and reconnect as your body slowly eases into a new day.
Try the Cat to Cow stretch ( CHAKRAVAKASANA).
This pose will help to release stiffness and embody flexibility. It’s an excellent antidote to days spent sitting at a desk. If you’re working from home it will help you to improve posture and spinal flexibility.
Start in Child’s Pose (BALASANA), take this time to connect with your breath for a few moments. Slowly inhaling and exhaling for a count of 4.
Choose some other poses to support your needs and gently build up as you work towards greater flexibility and strength.

]]>Each night if we are able to stay asleep out brains move through different sleep cycles on average every 90 to 120 minutes. To wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day we generally need to have spent between 7 – 9 hours asleep. Sure, it varies between individuals but however long you get, if you wake up feeling ready for the day, you’re probably getting enough sleep.
It’s so important that we have good quality sleep to maintain our healthy body and mind. Look how terrible we all feel when jetlag sets in or when a new baby keeps the household awake night after night. We all know how frayed and fractious the nerves of everyone become. And for some it can impact so many areas of health, safety and mental wellness.
Put simply there are 2 main types of sleep, REM sleep (rapid eye movement) and NREM sleep (non-rapid eye movement). Have you ever woken up from a vivid dream, frozen unable to move? It’s likely you were woken by your dream whilst in REM sleep. Some scientists believe we can’t move we are kind of ‘paralysed’ during REM sleep as a means of protection from acting out our dreams. On the flip side when we cycle into NREM sleep we enter very deep sleep, slow wave sleep, it’s the kind of ‘dead to the world’ sleep where you hear pretty much nothing and it’s hard to be woken up.
Sleep can be affected by many factors. Are you a shift worker? Do you have block out curtains? Is there a lot of ambient noise outside your bedroom? You get the picture! These are external factors that most of us can do something about.

Headaches are a very common form of pain. Rather than reaching for over-the-counter painkillers why not try some of these natural treatment methods. An ounce of prevention can go a long way to relieving many of the common causes of headache.
It’s a good idea to start the day with a large glass of water, add the juice of a lemon and a pinch of pink sea salt. It rebalances and hydrates the body after a night of sleep.
Here's a tip, make it a rule to drink a glass of water every 2 hours and always ask for water when you order a coffee.
Once you get into the habit your body will thank you for it in so many ways. Your skin and eyes will shine, your kidneys will eliminate toxins more efficiently the list goes on. But first and foremost you’ll lower the incidence of dehydration head aches. Of course it makes sense, the hotter the weather is the more you need to increase your water intake. And if you have a headache, drinking a couple of glasses of water is going to make you feel better.
Staying hydrated may be as simple as carrying a water bottle around and sipping on it throughout the day. Eating foods high in liquid, such as fruits, smoothies, or soups, may also improve hydration.
A cold compress may be a simple headache solution that many people have on hand. Applying an ice pack or another cold item to the head or neck may help constrict the blood vessels and reduce inflammation in the area whilst temporarily relieving headache pain. Try it for 30 minutes, it may alleviate the pain of migraine too. You could try frozen peas, a sports ice pack or chill down your lavender eye pillow for some instant relief.
In other cases, such as tension headache the muscles become tight. You might find that a warm compress will relax these muscles and bring relief. Place your lavender eye pillow in the microwave for a few seconds to speed up the benefits and relieve the pain.

Regular, moderate exercise may help, such as briskly walking or riding a bike for 30 minutes a day. It will also increase oxygen and blood flow to the brain. Exercise may help keep the body healthy and promote better circulation, which might reduce the chances of a headache showing up. If you don't take a lot of exercise, just make a start, take it easy and enjoy the journey!
Massaging the neck near the base of the skull may also help release tension. Massaging certain pressure points may help relieve tension in the head and reduce a headache. Many people do this instinctively, such as rubbing the back of the neck or pinching the top of the nose when they feel stressed. Try adding a dab of lavender oil and massaging into the temples.
